Ottawa Bach Choir performs Baroque and Contemporary works in Song and Spirit
Written by Administrator | Monday, April 02, 2012

For Immediate Release

Ottawa (Canada) – The Ottawa Bach Choir (OBC) performs the final concert of its tenth anniversary subscription series, Song and Spirit, on Saturday, May 12, 2012, 8:00 pm at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, 130 Glebe Avenue.  Under the direction of its Founder and Artistic Director, Lisette Canton, the OBC will present Baroque and Contemporary works by Bach, Monteverdi, Pachelbel, Purcell, Schütz, Nystedt, Pärt, and Whitacre; including a newly commissioned piece by Ottawa composer, Nicholas Piper. The OBC’s annual Silent Auction fundraiser will precede the concert, starting at 6:30 pm.

“This concert closes our spectacular 10th anniversary season with music by some of our favourite Baroque  composers, while also showcasing Contemporary music that brilliantly parallels the sound, structure and  texture of early music," says Founder and Artistic Director, Dr. Lisette Canton  “We also highlight one of  Canada's up-and-coming composers who hails from Ottawa and sings in the OBC.  This concert serves as a  magnificent prelude to the choir's invitation to perform at Podium 2012, to be held in Ottawa a week later."

The Ottawa Bach Choir turned ten this year and has had an amazing season of celebration. Just a year ago, this world-class professional ensemble debuted at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City to critical acclaim: "...you immediately heard the choir's chief assets: a bright, clear and transparent sound; a springy feel for rhythm; beautifully shaded dynamics; and exemplary diction..." (Steve Smith, The New York Times, May 24, 2011). As the choir expands in breadth, other up-coming performances in this special season include a performance at Podium 2012 (the biennial conference of the Association of Canadian Choral Communities), an Intimate Concert at the home of one our distinguished patrons, and appearances at the Music and Beyond Festival and the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival this summer. The OBC also released its 5th CD in honour of its tenth anniversary, Cantate Domino.

The Ottawa Bach Choir, which has received both national and international acclaim, was founded in 2002 by Lisette Canton and consists of some of the top choristers from the National Capital Region and beyond. With the combination of a scholarly and emotional approach to choral music, the OBC provides an unforgettable experience of music at its best.
