A Taste of the Italian Baroque
The first concert of the season includes Handel's
Dixit Dominus, written in 1707 when he was in Rome,
with Canadian soloists Gillian Keith, Soprano; Daniel
Taylor, Counter-tenor and an
internationally renowned baroque orchestra.
The concert highlights both a Baroque repertoire by
Italian composers and those inspired by the Venetian
style. Works by the Italians
– Gabrieli,
Monteverdi, A. Scarlatti and Martini
– will be
performed as well as compositions by Germans influenced
by this style, namely Schütz, Handel and Scheidt. Bach's
double choir motet, Der Geist hilft, completes
the programme.
