Ottawa Bach Choir announces
eighth exhilarating season
Ottawa Bach Choir – The Ottawa Bach Choir celebrates its eighth anniversary this year. The new concert season reflects the high level of excellence of this internationally acclaimed professional ensemble, fresh from its third magnificent European tour to Leipzig, London and Paris. Also this summer, the choir’s fourth CD, Jesu, meine Freude, received rave reviews from one of the United States’ most prestigious classical magazines, The American Record Guide:
“What a choir! They deliver tight, chiseled sound, deliciously pure tone, exemplary balance, squeaky-clean vocal counterpoint, flawless German diction, and utterly convincing spirituality.” (July/August 2009)
The regular season features three main concerts in the subscription series
(1) Haydn • Bach • Purcell Celebration, Friday, November 6, 2009, 8:00 pm, St. Matthew’s Church, 130 Glebe Ave. Highlights the 350th year of Purcell’s birth and the 200th year of Haydn’s death with stirring music by these two significant composers. The choir will also sing two festive cantatas by Bach. Ottawa-based international soprano, Donna Brown, joins the Choir for this joyous occasion along with baroque orchestra playing on period instruments.
(2) Christmas Around the World, Saturday, December 12, 2009, 8:00 pm, St. Jean Baptiste Church, 96 Empress Ave. This concert comprises new and old favourites for the season from Spain, England, France, Germany, Scandinavia and North America by composers such as Britten, Pärt, Patriquin, Praetorius and Susa. Ottawa harpist, Caroline Léonardelli, adds flair as soloist and accompanist for the performance. This concert will be recorded and broadcast by Espace Musique, the classical music station of Radio-Canada.
(3) Miserere, Sunday, March 21, 2010, 7:30 pm, Knox Presbyterian Church, corner Lisgar and Elgin. The final concert of the season presents music for Passiontide from the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods, and features Victoria’s strikingly beautiful Officium Defunctorum (Requiem) as well as works by Allegri, Byrd, Charpentier, Gallus and Schütz. Accompanied by continuo on period instruments, this beautiful music is sure to delight.
Regular Subscription tickets are available after August 22, 2009. Tickets for individual concerts will be available at several retail outlets closer to those dates. For more information visit the website www.ottawabachchoir.ca or call 613.270.1015.
