Ottawa Bach Choir celebrates Haydn, Bach and Purcell

Ottawa (Canada) - The Ottawa Bach Choir (OBC) launches its 2009-2010 subscription series with the first concert, Haydn • Bach • Purcell Celebration, on Friday, November 6, 2009, 8:00 pm at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church. This concert highlights the 350th year of Henry Purcell’s birth and the 200th year of Haydn’s death with stirring music by these two significant composers. Also part of the exciting programme are two festive cantatas by Bach. Ottawa-based international soprano, Donna Brown, joins the Choir for this joyous occasion along with baroque orchestra playing on period instruments.

“We are delighted to open our season with music by three great composers,” says Founder and Artistic Director, Lisette Canton. “Ottawa audiences will have a unique opportunity to experience this inspirational music in both the sacred and secular contexts, interpreted by a fantastic line-up of musicians.”

The OBC — founded in 2002 by Dr. Lisette Canton and consisting of some of the top choristers from the National Capital Region and beyond — has just returned from its third successful European tour where it performed to thousands in Leipzig, London and Paris.  Upcoming events include two impending national broadcasts. The first, on November 1, 2009 at 6:15 am on Espace Musique’s Réveil Classique with Mario Paquet, highlights excerpts from the Choir’s acclaimed CD Jesu, meine Freude. The second, on Sunday, November 1, 2009 from 10:00 am-11:00 am on CBC’s Choral Concert with Peter Togni, showcases the choir’s April 25, 2009 concert Prelude-Europe 2009, including music from its European tour this past summer.

Two other exhilarating concerts complete the OBC’s season: Christmas around the World, on December 12, 2009, 8:00 pm at St. Jean Baptiste Church, Ottawa, and Miserere, on Sunday, March 21, 2010, 7:30 pm at Knox Presbyterian Church, Ottawa.  In addition to its public performances, the choir has an extensive educational outreach program, which has taken choral music in both concert and workshop presentations into many Ottawa elementary and high schools.
